Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) – Cairns and Queensland
For millennia, people have been seeking ways to optimise physical, emotional and spiritual well being without the use of artificial elements, such as drugs and invasive procedures. Yoga, meditation, acupuncture and herbal remedies are all examples of people’s desire to live better and more authentically, naturally.
What is emotional freedom technique?
In psychological circles, this ambition is being met through advancements in the Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT). EFT is an exciting combination of Eastern wisdom about acupressure, or ‘meridian points’, and Western psychotherapy. The practice consists of tapping with your fingertips on specific meridian points whilst talking through traumatic memories and a wide range of emotions. “Acupoint tapping sends signals directly to the stress centres of the mid-brain, not mediated by the frontal lobes (the thinking part which is active in talk therapy),” explains Dr Church PhD, who has been researching and using EFT since 2002. As EFT simultaneously accesses stress on physical and emotional levels, he adds, “EFT gives you the best of both worlds, body and mind, like getting a massage during a psychotherapy session”.
EFT and stress
Modern lifestyles mean that people are experiencing higher and higher levels of stress on a daily basis. The body’s natural response to stressful situations is for the amygdala (an almond-shaped part of your brain that initiates the body’s negative reaction to fear) to release cortisol, which is known as the stress hormone. Cortisol is integral in the body’s ‘fight or flight’ response which was life-saving to ancient peoples when confronted by threats of imminent danger, such as a tiger attack. Useful in short bursts, the frequent release of cortisol brought on by the chronic stress of modern life, can cause serious physical, mental and emotional health issues. Please see the Stress Management page.
How does EFT work?
EFT is proving very effective in accessing the amygdala and reducing cortisol levels. By tapping on specific meridian points, cortisol and associated stress levels reduce and this practice has been directly linked to alleviating issues such as depression, anxiety, insomnia, severe PTSD, physical pain and even illness. Due to its benefits and ability to provide non-invasive treatment, the use of this treatment in modern psychology practices is expanding and Dr Church estimates that over 10 million people worldwide have used the technique. Dr Peta Stapleton, an Australian psychologist has a few very informative videos on line (Youtube) that show EFT in action.
